Since I am still very new to this whole bullet journal thing, my first bullet journal post tell you just how new I am, I certainly don’t know all of the ins and outs. I am learning and training myself a little at a time. I know what is working for me, and right now, that is basics. That means basic layouts, fonts, banners and general content. On a plus side, that also means basic supplies!
I’ll give you my top 5 super basic supplies to get started on your road to some sort of organization. Hell, my life is still chaos, but I feel like its a start!
#1 A Bullet Journal! (affiliate link) (Kinda like a regular one, but with dots instead of lines)
This seems like a pretty obvious one. Now, I just wanted something kinda small and basic, but not too small. I also wanted it to be black, I knew this. I figured if I can stick to this through one whole journal, and really make it worth it, then I deserved to buy myself a pretty one for my second journal. My first notebook is a generic black dot journal like this one (affiliate link). I think this important part is just a personal preference. There are a lot on Amazon that seem pretty similar, take a look here (affiliate link). Of course you have different colors and patterns, but they all have the same dotted pages.
#2 A Pencil (affiliate link)
I choose to do most of my general stuff in Pencil (affiliate link) and go over it later in pretty colors. I realized I was way more likely to use this thing consistently if I didn’t always have to be creative immediately. I like going back after I have most of my information and using the coloring and finalizing almost like a meditation therapy.
It reiterates what I have written too since I am forced to read it again while tracing in pen later. I can also erase my screw ups when I suck at drawing lol. I guess that’s really the main reason!
I started with Papermate (affiliate link) pink lead cuz I thought I was just the coolest mom on the block, and I just love new office supplies for some reason. I have also just bought a 6 pack of colored lead pencils (affiliate link) and the refill packs. For some reason they only come in 2 packs. One has red, green and blue (affiliate link) and the other one has pink, orange and purple (affiliate link). They write super smooth so I keep coming back. I’m sure you can find one that is just perfect that you love writing with. It’s about enjoying it or you will never want to pick up that pencil and update.
#3 Pens (affiliate link)
If I wanted to I could just stick to colored lead now that I discovered how awesome it is. I think that’s what I may now do moving on, but the pens are still fun (affiliate link), especially for the layouts. If I will be using colored lead pencils to update everything, or even regular pencil for that matter, I want to make sure when I erase my f-up’s I don’t erase my whole layout. I chose Sharpie pens (affiliate link) because I already know they don’t bleed and the pens last a long time. They are also my go to at work in general, although at work I stick to basic black.(affiliate link)
#4 Washi Tape(affiliate link)
Washi tape isn’t really a “must have” but bullet journaling is definitely more fun with colorful patterns! I like Scotch Expressions(affiliate link) because it sticks really well, but if I screw up when putting it on, it doesn’t tear the page fixing it. This stuff comes in any color or pattern you could hope for. I picked 3 cute basic ones because I sadly couldn’t find a camo one yet. I have one color dedicated to basic home stuff, one for my personal blog and one for the blogs I guest post on. This helps me easily find things I want to look back on or update.
#5 Cute Pencil Pouch(affiliate link)
And this one definitely isn’t a “must have” but if you find a cute pencil pouch that speaks to your inner unicorn like these on Amazon(affiliate link), then get it because why not? I had just a rubber band holding my pens at first. Then, since I started just before Christmas I happened to get a freakin awesome Unicorn Lovers pencil pouch. It was meant to be! Maybe you find one that speaks to your inner mermaid, hunter, hippie, whatever it may be. Just get it!
